NIVELLES (Flem. Nyvel) , a See also:town of See also:Belgium in the See also:province of See also:Brabant, situated on the Thines 19 m. S. of See also:Brussels. Pop. (1904) 12,109. It is a busy little See also:place with many See also:industries, notably the manufacture of See also:parchment. The town is supposed to owe its origin to the See also:foundation of a See also:convent on the spot by Itta or Iduberge, wife of See also:Pippin of See also:Landen. The Romanesque See also:church of St Gertrude, named after Itta's daughter, See also:dates from the nth See also:century, but has been badly restored and is disfigured by a heavy See also:tower. On the See also:top of the tower is the effigy of a See also:man in See also:iron who strikes the See also:hours with a See also:hammer. He is called by the townspeople See also:Jean de Nivelles, a celebrated See also:baron of the 15th century whose See also:title eventually became merged in that of the See also:count de See also:Hornes (See also:Horn). The church is supposed to occupy the site of Itta's convent. See also:Close to Nivelles is Seneffe, where See also:Conde defeated See also:William of See also:Orange in 1674, and at Nivelles itself the See also:French under Marceau defeated the Austrians in 1794.
