NYBORG , a seaport of See also:Denmark on the See also:east See also:side of the See also:island of Fffnen, in the amt (See also:county) of See also:Svendborg, and the point from which the See also:ferry crosses the See also:Great See also:Belt to KorsSr in See also:Zealand (15 M.). Pop. (19o1) 9790. The fortress, built by See also:Christian IV. and See also:Frederick III., was dismantled in 1869, and the ruins of the See also:castle are used as a See also:prison. In the 12th See also:century the See also:town was founded and a castle erected on Knudshoved (Canute's See also:Head) by Knud, See also:nephew of Waldemar the Great; and from the 13th to the 15th century Nyborg was one of the most important places in Denmark. In 1658 it surrendered to the Swedes; but by the defeat of the latter under the walls of the fortress on the 24th of See also:November 1659, the See also:country was freed from their dominion. In 18o8 the See also:Marquis La See also:Romana, who with a See also:body of See also:Spanish troops garrisoned the fortress for See also:France, revolted from his See also:allegiance, and held out till he and a portion of his men escaped with the See also:English See also:fleet.
