ORANGEBURG , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of . Orangeburg county, See also:South Carolina, U.S.A., on the See also:North Edisto See also:river, so m. S. by E. of See also:Columbia. Pop. (1890) 2964; (1900) 4455 (2518 negroes); (1910) 5906. Orangeburg is served by the See also:Atlantic See also:Coast See also:Line and the See also:Southern See also:railways. It is the seat of See also:Claflin University for negroes, and of the See also:State Colored Norma], See also:Industrial, Agricultural and See also:Mechanical See also:College. Claflin University, incorporated in 1869, was named in See also:honour of See also:Lee Claflin (1791–1871) of See also:Massachusetts, and is under the See also:control of the. Freed-men's Aid and See also:Education Society of the Methodist Episcopal See also:Church. In 1908 it had 25 instructors and 538 students (241 men and 297 See also:women). The State Colored Normal, Industrial, Agri-cultural and Mechanical College was established here by the state in 1872 as the College of See also:Agriculture and See also:Mechanics' See also:Institute (for negroes), on See also:property immediately adjoining the campus of Claflin University, and the two See also:schools were under one management (although otherwise distinct and See also:separate) until 1896, when the See also:present name of the state college was adopted. Among the city's manufactures are See also:cotton-See also:seed oil, cotton (See also:yarn and See also:cloth), See also:lumber, bricks, See also:concrete and See also:turpentine.

The See also:

municipality owns the See also:water-See also:works and the electric-See also:lighting plant. A trader and trapper settled on the site of what is now Orangeburg in 1704. In 1735 a See also:company of Germans and Swiss established the first real See also:settlement and named it Orangeburg, in honour of the See also:prince of See also:Orange. Orangeburg was incorporated as a See also:town in 1851, and was first chartered as a city in 1883.
