ORANGEBURG , a See also:city and the See also:county-seat of . Orangeburg county, See also:South Carolina, U.S.A., on the See also:North Edisto See also:river, so m. S. by E. of See also:Columbia. Pop. (1890) 2964; (1900) 4455 (2518 negroes); (1910) 5906. Orangeburg is served by the See also:Atlantic See also:Coast See also:Line and the See also:Southern See also:railways. It is the seat of See also:Claflin University for negroes, and of the See also:State Colored Norma], See also:Industrial, Agricultural and See also:Mechanical See also:College. Claflin University, incorporated in 1869, was named in See also:honour of See also: The See also:municipality owns the See also:water-See also:works and the electric-See also:lighting plant. A trader and trapper settled on the site of what is now Orangeburg in 1704. In 1735 a See also:company of Germans and Swiss established the first real See also:settlement and named it Orangeburg, in honour of the See also:prince of See also:Orange.
