The town is situated on the See also:river Ichhamati, near the old See also:bed of the See also:Ganges. Pop. (lgor), 18,424. The district of Pabna has an See also:area of 1839 sq. m. Pop (19o1), 1,420,461, showing an increase of 4.8% in the See also:decade. It is bordered along its entire See also:east See also:face by the See also:main stream of the See also:Brahmaputra or Jamuna, and along its See also:south-westface by the Ganges or Padma. It is entirely of alluvial origin, the silt of the See also:annual inundations overlying strata of See also:clay on See also:sand. Apart from the two See also:great bordering See also:rivers, it is intersected by countless See also:water-channels of varying magnitude, so that during the See also:rainy See also:season every See also:village is accessible by See also:boat and by boat only. Almost the whole area is one See also:green See also:rice-See also: See also:Sirajganj, on the Brahmaputra, is the largest mart for jute in Bengal. The Eastern Bengal railway cuts across the south-See also:west corner of the district to Sara, where a See also:bridge crosses the Ganges. The district was affected by the See also:earthquake of the 12th of See also:June 1897, which was most severely See also:felt at Sirajganj.
