PAUSIAS , a See also:

Greek painter of the 4th See also:century, of the school of See also:Sicyon. He introduced the See also:custom of See also:painting ceilings of houses. His See also:great merit appears to have lain in the better rendering of foreshortening. The words in which See also:Pliny (See also:xxxv. 127) describes a See also:bull painted by him should be quoted: " Wishing to display the length of the bull's See also:body, he painted it from the front, not in See also:profile, and yet fully indicated its measure. Again, while others fill in with See also:white the high See also:lights, and paint in See also:black what is less salient, he painted the whole bull of dark See also:colour, and gave substance to the See also:shadow out of the shadow itself, with great skill making his figures stand out from a See also:flat background, and indicating their shape when foreshortened." This passage well marks the See also:state of painting at the See also:time.
