PESCHIERA SUL See also:

GARDA , a fortress of See also:Venetia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Verona, on an See also:island in the Mincio at its outlet from the See also:lake of Garda, 77 M. by See also:rail E. of See also:Milan. It was one of the famous fortresses of the See also:Quadrilateral, the See also:chief See also:bulwark of the See also:Austrian See also:rule in Italy until 1866 (See also:Mantua, See also:Legnago and Verona being the other three) and has played a prominent See also:part in all the See also:campaigns conducted in See also:north Italy, more especially during the See also:Napoleonic See also:wars. It was taken by the Piedmontese from the Austrians, after a gallant See also:defence by See also:General See also:Rath lasting six See also:weeks, on the 3oth of May 1848, and since that date has been in See also:Italian hands.
