PRZEMYSL , a See also:

town of See also:Austria, in See also:Galicia, 6o m. W. of See also:Lemberg by See also:rail. Pop. (1900), 46,295, mostly See also:Polish. It is situated on the See also:river See also:San and is one of the strongest fortresses in Galicia. Przemysl is the seat of a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and of a See also:Greek uniat See also:bishop, and has a Roman Catholic See also:cathedral, begun in 146o. The See also:industries comprise the manufacture of machinery, See also:liqueurs and spodium or tutty, the refining of See also:naphtha, See also:corn-milling and the sawing of See also:timber. The See also:trade is chiefly in timber, corn, See also:leather and See also:linen. On the See also:hill above the town are the ruins of an old See also:castle, said to have been founded by Casimir the See also:Great. Przemysl, one of the See also:oldest towns in Galicia, claims to have been founded in the 8th See also:century, and was at one See also:time See also:capital of a large See also:independent, principality. Casimir the Great and other Polish princes endowed it with privileges similar to those of See also:Cracow, and it attained a high degree of prosperity. In the 17th century its importance was destroyed by inroads of See also:Tatars, See also:Cossacks and Swedes.
