SANTA MARIA , a seaport of See also:southern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Cadiz, on the right See also:bank of the See also:river Guadalete, with a station on the railway from Cadiz to See also:Seville. Pop. (1900), 20,120. Puerto de Santa Maria, commonly called " El Puerto," is probably the Menesthei See also:Portus of See also:Ptolemy. Its most important See also:industry is the See also:wine See also:trade; there are also See also:glass,liqueur, See also:alcohol, See also:starch and See also:soap manufactures. The See also:principal buildings are a Moorish citadel, a See also:Gothic See also:church founded in the 13th See also:century, a Jesuit See also:college, and a See also:bull-See also:ring which accommodates 12,000 spectators. The See also:town is noted for its bull-fights, that given here in See also:honour of See also:Wellington being the subject of the considerably idealized description in See also:Byron's Childe Harold.
