RAWALPINDI , a See also:town of See also:British See also:India, which gives its name to a See also:district and a See also:division in the See also:Punjab. The town is situated on the See also:north See also:bank of the little See also:river See also:Leh, 1726 ft. above the See also:sea, i if m. E. by S. of See also:Peshawar, and 1443 M. N.W. of See also:Calcutta. Pop. (1901) 87,688. It is chiefly notable as the largest military station in India, and the See also: An See also:annual See also:horse See also:fair is held in See also:April. The DISTRICT OF RAWALPINDI has an See also:area of 2010 sq. m., See also:Attock having been separated from it and formed into a See also:separate district in 1904. It is situated on the See also:southern slopes of the north-western extremities of the Himalayas, including large See also:mountain tracts with See also:rich valleys traversed by mountain torrents. It contains the Murree hills with the See also:sanatorium of that name, the See also:chief hill-station in the Punjab. The See also:Indus and the See also:Jhelum are the chief See also:rivers, and the See also:climate is noted for its healthiness. The See also:principal crops are See also:wheat, See also:barley, See also:maize, millets. and pulses. The district is traversed by the See also:main See also:line of the North-Western railway, See also:crossing the Indus at Attock, and also by a See also:branch towards the Indus at See also:Kushalgarh. The See also:population in 1901 was 558,699, showing an increase of 4.7 % in the See also:decade. The DIVISION OF RAWALPINDI lies in the north-west of the Punjab. It consists of the five districts of See also:Gujrat, Attock, See also:Shahpur, Jhelum, and Rawalpindi. The See also:total area is 15,736 sq. m. and the population in 190I was 2,799, 360.
