ROSKILDE, or ROESKILDE , a See also:town of See also:Denmark in the amt (See also:county) of KjSbenhavn (See also:Copenhagen), 20 M. by See also:rail W. of Copenhagen, on the See also:great See also:lagoon-like inlet named Roskilde See also:Fjord. Pop. (1901) 8368. It has a small See also:port, and is an important railway junction, from which lines diverge W., S.W. and S. through the See also:island of See also:Zealand. Its See also:interest, however, is See also:historical. It was the See also:capital of the See also:kingdom until 1443, and the See also:residence of the bishops of Zealand until the See also:Reformation. The See also:cathedral, a beautiful See also:church, was consecrated in 1084, but of this See also:early See also:building only See also:foundation walls remain; the See also:present structure of See also:brick was begun in 1215, and enlarged and restored at various later See also:dates. It stands in relation to Danish See also:history somewhat as See also:Westminster See also:Abbey does to See also:English, containing the tombs of most of the Danish See also:kings from Harold I. (987). The most noteworthy architectural details are the See also:Chapel of the Trinity (15th See also:century) and that of See also:Christian IV. (See also:Renaissance, 1617), carved See also:choir-stalls, and an See also:altar-piece of the 16th century. Other old buildings are a church of Our See also:Lady, dating as it stands from 1242, a diocesan library (partly of the 15th century), royal See also:palace (1733) and See also:institute for daughters of noblemen (167o).
