ROSTOCK , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand duchy of See also:Mecklenburg-See also:Schwerin, one of the most important commercial cities on the Baltic. It is situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:estuary of the Warnow, 8 m. from the See also:port of Warnemunde on the Baltic. 177 M. N.W. of See also:Berlin by See also:rail, 8o m. N.E. of See also:Lubeck, and 106 m. S. of See also:Copenhagen. Pop. (1905) 60,790. It consists of three parts—the old town to the See also:east, and the See also:middle and new towns to the See also:west—of which the first retains some of the See also:antique features of a Hanse town, while the last two are for the most See also:part regularly and handsomely built. There are also several suburbs. The town has four See also:gates, one of them dating from the 14th See also:century, and some See also:fine squares, among them the See also:Blucher Platz, with a statue of Blucher, who was See also:born here, and the Neue Markt. Rostock was a fortress of some strength, but the old fortifications have been razed, and their site is occupied by promenades.
