SCHALCKEN, GODFRIED (1643-1706) , Dutch genre and portrait painter, was See also:born at See also:Dort in 1643, and studied under See also:Hoogstraten, and afterwards under See also:Gerhard See also:Douw, whose See also:works his earlier genre-pictures very closely resemble. He visited See also:England and painted several portraits, of which the See also:half-length of See also:William III., now in the Museum, See also:Amsterdam, is a See also:good example. In this See also:work he shows an effect of See also:candle-See also:light, which he also introduced—frequently with See also:fine effect—in many of his subject-pictures. These may be studied in the collections at See also:Buckingham See also:Palace, the Louvre, See also:Vienna and See also:Dresden. His Scriptural subjects are of very indifferent merit. He died at The See also:Hague in 1706.
