He was Privy Councillor and See also:President of the Chamber at the See also:court of See also:Gotha. Becoming interested in See also:geology he gathered together a very extensive collection of fossils. In 1804 he published descriptions and illustrations of remarkable remains of (Carboniferous) See also:plants, Ein Beitrag zur See also:Flora der Vorwelt. His more important See also:work was entitled See also:Die Petrefactenkunde (182o). In this he incorporated the plates used in his previous memoir and supplemented it by a See also:folio See also:atlas (1822), in which he illustrated his collection " of petrified and fossil remains of the See also:animal and See also:vegetable See also:kingdom of a former See also:world." For the first See also:time in See also:Germany the fossils were named according to the See also:binomial See also:system. The specimens are preserved in the See also:Berlin Museum. He died at Gotha on the 28th of See also:March 1832.
