In 1858 he took a university See also:prize for a See also:treatise on the Ethiopian See also:languages, and in 1863 became See also:professor of See also:theology at See also:Zurich. Subsequently he occupied chairs at See also:Giessen (187o) and See also:Jena (1873), and finally became professor of See also:oriental languages at See also:Berlin. Though he turned first to biblical See also:research, his See also:chief achievements were in the See also:field of Assyriology, in which he was a See also:pioneer in See also:Germany and acquired an See also:international reputation. He died on the 4th of See also:July 19o8. His publications include: Studien zur Kritik and Erkldrung der biblischen Urgeschichte (1863); the 8th edition of De Wette's Einleitung in das Alte Testament (1869) ; See also:Die assyr.-babyl. Keilinschriften (1872); Die Keilinschriften and das Alt. Test. (1872; 3rd ed. by Zimmern and Winckler, 1901–1902); Keilinschriften and Geschichtsforschung (1878); Die Hollenfahrt der Istar (See also:text, trans., notes, 1874) ; Zur Frage nach dem Ursprung der altbabylonischen Kultur (1884); in See also:conjunction with other scholars, Keilinschriftliche Bibliothek (1877).
