Selkirk took deep See also:interest in the evicted peasants, and tried to organize See also:emigration to the See also:British colonies. In 1803–1804 he founded a large and prosperous See also:settlement in See also:Prince See also:Edward See also:Island, and at about the same time a smaller one at Baldoon in Upper See also:Canada. He later turned his See also:attention to the See also:Canadian See also:west, and gradually
acquired See also:control of the See also:Hudson's See also:Bay See also:Company. In May 1811 an immense See also:tract was granted to him in the Red See also:River valley, and he at once proceeded to send out settlers; but the hostility of the See also:North-West See also:Fur Company, with its headquarters at See also:Montreal, eventually ruined the See also:colony (see RED RIVER SETTLEMENT), and the See also:influence of his rivals led to the defeat of Selkirk in various legal proceedings. On the 8th of See also:April 182o he died broken-hearted at See also:Pau. One of the most generous and disinterested men in the See also:history of colonization, he See also:fell a victim to the predatory selfishness of his rivals.
