SELMECZBANYA , officially called SELMECZ-ES BELABANYA (Ger. Schemnitz), the See also:capital of the See also:county of Hont, See also:Hungary, 152 M. N. of See also:Budapest by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 16,370, about two-thirds See also:Slovaks. It is an old See also:mining See also:town, situated at an See also:altitude of 1945 ft. in a deep See also:ravine in the Hungarian Ore Mountains, and is built in" terraces. Selmeczbanya is encircled by high mountains, notably the isolated See also:peak of the Calvarienberg (2385 ft.) on the S.W., on which are situated a See also:castle and a See also:- CHURCH

About 7 M. to the S.W. of the town See also:lie the See also:baths of Vihnye, with springs of See also:iron, See also:lime and carbonic See also:acid, and about the same distance to the W. are the baths of Szkleno with springs of See also:sulphur and lime.
Selmeczbanya is an old town whose mines existed in the 8th century. In the 12th century, together with the whole mining region of See also:northern Hungary, it was colonized by See also:German settlers, who later embraced the See also:Reformation. Owing to the See also:counter-reformation the German See also:element was driven out during the 18th century, and its See also:place taken by the actual Slovak See also:population.
