Sequeira sojourned in Rome from 1788 to 1794, when he was made honorary member of the Academy of St See also:Luke. After another two years' travel and study in See also:Italy, he returned to his native See also:country preceded by so See also:great a reputation that important commissions for churches and palaces were immediately entrusted to him—scriptural subjects, large See also:historical compositions and See also:cabinet pictures. In 1802 he was appointed first See also:court painter, in which capacity he executed many See also:works for the See also:prince See also:regent, for Donna Maria Teresa, and for the members of the court. He designed the valuable See also:silver service which was presented by the Portuguese nation to See also:Wellington, and a See also:monument that was erected in 182o in the Rocio square at Lisbon. In 1823 he visited See also:Paris, where he is known to have tried his skill in See also:lithography and See also:etching. The last years of his See also:life he spent in Rome, devoting himself chiefly to devotional subjects and to his duties as See also:head of the Portuguese Academy. He died in Rome in 1837. His best-known pictures are the " Last Moments of the Poet See also:Camoens," " See also:Flight into See also:Egypt," " Ugolino," the " St See also:Bruno " at the Lisbon Academy, and the "Descent from the See also:Cross." Numerous paintings by Sequeira are in the royal palace at See also:Mafra, the See also:convent of Laveinas, the new palace of Ajuda, and in the See also:principal palaces and churches of Lisbon.
