He was by turns a bookseller's assistant, a private schoolmaster, a journalist, and See also:master at the See also:grammar See also:schools of See also:Brest and of Miilhausen. He settled in See also:Paris in 1836, where he was made (1848) See also:professor in a school for the instruction of civil servants. He began his See also:literary career with a See also:drama, played at the See also:Theatre See also:francais in 1828, the See also:Siege de See also:Missolonghi. In novel See also:writing he did much better than for the See also:stage, although he deliberately aimed at making the novel an See also:engine of moral instruction. His best See also:work is undoubtedly to be found in the charming Derniers Bretons (4 vols., 1835-1837) and Foyer See also:breton (1844), where the folk-See also:lore and natural features of his native See also:province are worked up into See also:story See also:form, and in Un Philosophe sous See also:les toils, which received in 1851 a well deserved See also:academic See also:prize. He also wrote a number of other See also:works—novels, dramas, essays and miscellanies. He died in Paris on the 5th of See also:July 1854.
