But his quarrels with another Vendean See also:leader, F. A. Charette, and the reverses sustained by the Vendean arms, led him to give in his submission and to accept the terms of the treaty of La Jaunaie (May 2, 1795). He, however, soon violated this treaty, and at the instigation of royalist agents took arms in See also:December 1795 on behalf of the See also:count of See also:Provence (the future See also:Louis XVIII.), from whom he had received the See also:rank of marechal-de-See also:camp. This last See also:attempt of Stofflet's failed completely. He was taken prisoner by the republicans, condemned to See also:death by a military See also:commission, and shot at See also:Angers on the 23rd of See also:February 1796.
