He was brought up on a See also:farm, was a clerk in a See also:drug-See also:store, graduated from the medical See also:department of Transylvania University in 1838, and practised See also:medicine in Barboursville, Kentucky, until 1847. In that See also:year he was admitted to the See also:bar, and entered politics as a Whig. His See also:anti-See also:slavery sympathies induced him to See also:settle in See also:Iowa, where in 185o he freed his slaves and began to practise See also:law in See also:Keokuk, and he soon became a See also:leader of the Republican party in the See also:state. In 1862 he succeeded See also:Justice See also:Peter V. See also:Daniel (1784-186o), as a justice of the U.S. Supreme See also:Court, and served until his See also:death in See also:Washington, D.C., on the 13th of See also:October 1890, when he was See also:senior justice. Miller was a See also:man of See also:great See also:mental force and individuality, and his judgments carried great See also:weight. In 1877 he was a member of the electoral See also:commission, which adopted his See also:motion that See also:Congress could not " go behind the returns " as properly accredited by state officials. He was a prominent member of the Unitarian See also:Church and for three years was See also:president of its See also:national See also:conference. He published a See also:volume of Lectures on the Constitution of the See also:United States (New See also:York, 1891), See Wm. A.
