Orleans expedition. After the See also:general See also:peace he travelled for two years about See also:Europe, and then went to South See also:America. The See also:war which culminated in the See also:expulsion of the Spaniards was just breaking out, and he took command in the Chilean artillery, with which he served during the Chilean part of the war. As a See also:major he commanded the See also:marines on Cochrane's See also:vessel, the " O'See also:Higgins." Martin against the See also:Spanish General Canterac. He was made general of See also:brigade, and became very intimate with See also:Simon See also:Bolivar. He rendered the most conspicuous services at See also:Junin (Aug. 6, 1824), and his See also:regiment, the " Hussars of Junin," covered itself with See also:glory in the decisive victory of See also:Ayacucho (Dec. 9, 1824). From 183o to 1839 he filled various high military and See also:political offices in Peru. In the latter year he was involved in the fall of See also:Santa Cruz, and went into See also:- EXILE (Lat. exsilium or exilium, from exsul or exul, which is derived from ex, out of, and the root sal, to go, seen in salire, to leap, consul, &c.; the connexion with solum, soil, country is now generally considered wrong)
exile. For some years he filled the See also:post of British See also:Consul-General of the Pacific See also:Coast. He died on See also:board H.M.S. " Naiad " at See also:Callao, on the 31st of See also:October 1861.
