In 1836, having completed his See also:education, he entered the Bibliotheque Nationale, and afterwards the Bibliotheque de 1'Institut (1844), where he devoted himself to the study of See also:archaeology, See also:ancient and See also:modern See also:languages, See also:medicine and See also:law. Gifted with a See also:great capacity for See also:work, a remarkable memory and an unbiassed and See also:critical mind, he produced without great effort a number of learned See also:pamphlets and books on the most varied subjects. He rendered great service to the See also:Academic See also:des See also:Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, of which he had been elected a member in 1857. See also:Napoleon III. employed him in See also:research work connected with the Histoire de Cesar, and he was rewarded, proportionately to his active, if modest, See also:part in this work, with the positions of librarian of the Tuileries (186o), See also:professor at the See also:College of See also:France (x862) and director-See also:general of the Archives (1868). It was not, however, to the imperial favour that he owed these high positions. He used his See also:influence for the See also:advancement of See also:science and higher education, and with See also:Victor See also:Duruy was one of the founders of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes. He died at See also:Paris four years after his retirement from the last See also:post, on the 11th of See also:February 1892.
