TIDORE or TIDOR, an See also:island of the See also:Malay See also:Archipelago, off the W. See also:coast of See also:Halmahera, S. of See also:Ternate. It is nearly circular and has an See also:area of about 3o sq. m. Several quiescent volcanic peaks, reaching S7oo ft., occupy most of the island, and are covered with forests. The See also:capital, Tidore, on the See also:east coast, is a walled See also:town and the seat of a See also:sultan tributary to the Dutch 'See also:Thomson and See also:Tait's Nat. Phil., app. E; Nature (See also:Jan. 27, 1887): See also:Wolf, Theories cosmogoniques (1886). . and of a Dutch controleur (See also:commissioner or See also:agent). By an agreement of 1879 the sultan exercises authority over some parts of Halmahera, the Papuan Islands, the western See also:half of New See also:Guinea and the islands in Geelvink Gulf. The sultanate is included in the residency of Ternate (q.v.). The See also:population, of Malay See also:race and Mahommedans in See also:religion, is about 8000.
