In his boyhood he was an assiduous student cf See also:bird and See also:animal See also:life, and showed a remark-able capacity as a draughtsman of natural See also:history subjects. His See also:powers were first recognized by See also:Professor See also:Schlegel of the See also:Leiden museum, who gave him employment as an illustrator. In 1848 he settled in See also:London, where he remained till his See also:death on the loth of See also:April 1899. He made many drawings for the Zoological Society, and a very large number of illustrations for books on natural history and on travel in various countries; but he also won a considerable success as a painter.
