TRIVANDRUM, or TREVANDRUM , a See also:city of See also:southern See also:India, See also:capital of the See also:state of See also:Travancore, situated 2 M. from the See also:sea-See also:coast. Pop. (1901), 57,882. It is the See also:residence of the maharaja, and contains an See also:observatory and a museum, besides several other See also:fine buildings. The See also:chief fame of the See also:place, however, centres upon the See also:shrine of Sri Ananta Padmanabhaswami, a See also:great resort of pilgrims, See also:round which the city See also:grew up. The best houses and chief public buildings stand on hilly terraces. The city contains the maharaja's See also:college, a See also:Sanskrit college, a high school, a school for girls, an See also:industrial school of arts, and a See also:hospital and medical school. There is little See also:trade, but a speciality of See also:wood-See also:carving. Trivandrum has a small seaport, but the vessels that See also:touch here have to See also:anchor at some consider-able distance from the See also:shore, and the See also:port itself is not fitted for any great commercial development.
