TURNU SEVERIN , the See also:

capital of the See also:department of Mehedintzi, See also:Rumania, on the See also:main Walachian railway, and on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river See also:Danube, below the See also:Iron See also:Gates cataracts. Pop. (1900), 18,628. It is a See also:modern commercial See also:town, having a school of arts and crafts, several churches, and large See also:government yards for the See also:building of river steamers, lighters and tug-boats. There is a considerable See also:trade in livestock, preserved See also:meat, See also:petroleum and cereals. The town, which was originally called Drobetae by the See also:Romans, took its later name of Turris Severi, or the " See also:Tower of See also:Severus," from a tower which stood on a small See also:hill surrounded by a deep See also:fosse. This was built to commemorate a victory over the Quadi and See also:Marcomanni, by the See also:Roman See also:emperor Severus (A.D. 222-235). Near Turnu Severin are the remains of the celebrated See also:Trajan's See also:bridge, the largest in the Roman See also:Empire, built in A.D. 103 by the architect See also:Apollodorus of See also:Damascus. The river is about 4000 ft. broad at this spot. The bridge was composed of twenty See also:arches supported by See also:stone pillars, several of which are still visible at See also:low See also:water.
