At the beginning of the See also:Civil See also:War he became See also:colonel of the Second Wisconsin See also:Cavalry, was promoted to brigadier-See also:general on the 16th of See also:July 1862 and to See also:major-general on the 29th of See also:November. 1862, and assisted in the See also:capture of See also:Vicksburg (4th July 1863), after which he served in See also:Texas and See also:West See also:Tennessee. Resigning from the See also:army in 1865, he became extensively interested in See also:flour-milling and lumbering in Wisconsin. From 1867 to 1871 he was again a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and subsequently served one See also:term (1872–1874) as See also:governor of Wisconsin.
