It is the seat of North-western University (,865; Lutheran), which includes collegiate, preparatory and See also:academic departments, and had in 1908–1909 11 instructors and 283 students, and of the Sacred See also:Heart See also:College (See also:Roman See also:Catholic, opened in 1872 and chartered in 1874), under the See also:Congregation of the See also:Holy See also:Cross. There are also a See also:Carnegie library, a Lutheran See also:Home for the Feeble-Minded, and a City See also:Hospital. The Rock river furnishes water-See also:power which is utilized for manufacturing. The value of the factory product in 1905 was $2,065,487. The city is situated in a dairying and farming region. The See also:municipality owns and operates its water-See also:works. Watertown was founded about 1836 by settlers who gave it the name of their former home, Watertown, New See also:York. Afterwards there was a See also:great influx of Germans, particularly after the Revolution of 1848, among them being Carl See also:Schurz, who began the practice of See also:law here. Germans by See also:birth or descent still constitute a See also:majority of the See also:population. Watertown was incorporated as a See also:village in 1849, and was chartered as a city in 1853.
