He studied See also:philology at the See also:universities of See also:Bonn, See also:Gottingen and See also:Berlin, and in 1843 he began to See also:work upon the Monumenta Germaniae histories'. In 1855 he was appointed archivist at See also:Breslau; in 1862 he became See also:professor of See also:history at See also:Heidelberg, and ten years later professor at Berlin, where he was a member of the directing See also:body of the Monumenta and 'a member of the See also:Academy. He died at See also:Frankfort on the 21st of September 1897.
