ZACATECAS , a See also:

city of See also:Mexico, See also:capital of the See also:state of Zacatecas, 442 M. by the Mexican Central railway N.W. of Mexico city. Pop. (19o0) 39,912. It is built in a deep, narrow See also:ravine, 8050 ft. above See also:sea-level, with narrow, crooked streets climbing the steep hillsides, and See also:white, See also:flat-roofed houses of four and five storeys overtopping each other. Its streets are well paved, and are lighted with See also:electricity. The city is well drained and has a See also:fine See also:aqueduct for its See also:water See also:supply. The See also:cathedral is an elaborately carved red-See also:stone structure with unfinished towers and richly decorated interior. Several domed churches occupy prominent sites. The See also:National See also:College and the Colegio de Nuesta Senora de Guadalupe with its fine library may be noticed. Overlooking the city from an See also:elevation of 500 ft. is the Bufa See also:Hill, which is crowned by a See also:chapel and is a popular See also:pilgrimage resort. The Guadalupe chapel near the city has elaborate decorations, including frescoes, See also:onyx steps, See also:silver rails and paintings, and a curious tiled See also:dome. The See also:industries comprise See also:carriage See also:building, See also:weaving and the manufacture of coarse pottery.

The See also:

town is an important commercial centre. Zacatecas was founded in 1546 and was built over a See also:rich vein of silver discovered by Juan de Tolosa in the same See also:year. This and other mines in the vicinity attracted a large See also:population, and it soon became one of the See also:chief See also:mining centres of Mexico. It was made a city in 1585 by See also:Philip II.
