ZIERIKSEE , a See also:

town in the See also:province of See also:Zeeland, See also:Holland, on the See also:south See also:side of the See also:island of Schouwen. Pop. 6800. It is a very old town, and formerly flourished exceedingly on See also:account of its See also:trade and fishing, and important See also:salt-making See also:industry, and now is the See also:chief See also:market centre and See also:port in the island. Among the See also:principal buildings are the town-See also:hall (15th See also:century); the See also:Great See also:Church, which was rebuilt after a See also:fire in 1832, but retains the lofty See also:tower (1454) belonging to the earlier See also:building; the Little Church, the See also:prison and the See also:exchange. The chief public square occupies the site of a See also:residence of the See also:counts of Zeeland dating from 1048.
