See also:ALE-CONNER, an officer appointed yearly at the See also:court-leet of See also:ancient See also:English manors for the See also:assize of ale and ale-See also:measures. The gustatores cervisiae--called in different localities by the different names ale-tasters," " ale-founders," and ` aleconners "—were sworn to examine See also:beer and ale, to take care that they were See also:good and wholesome and were sold at proper prices. In See also:London four ale-conners, whose See also:duty it is to examine the measures used by beer and liquor sellers to guard against See also:fraud, are still chosen annually by the liverymen in See also:common See also:hall assembled on Midsummer See also:Day. Since ale and beer have become excisable commodities the See also:custom of appointing ale-tasters has in most places fallen into disuse.
