ALGHERO , a seaport and episcopal see on the W. See also:coast of See also:Sardinia, in the See also:province of See also:Sassari, 21 M. S.S.W. by See also:rail from the See also:town of Sassari. Pop. (1901) 10,779. The see was founded in 1503, but the See also:cathedral itself See also:dates from the 12th See also:century,though it has been reconstructed. The town was strongly fortified by See also:medieval walls, which have to some extent been demolished. It was originally founded by the See also:Doria See also:family of See also:Genoa about 1102, but was occupied by the See also:house of See also:Aragon in 1354, who held it successfully against various attacks until it See also:fell to the house of See also:Savoy with the See also:rest of Sardinia in 1720.
