ALTDORF , the See also:capital of the Swiss See also:canton of See also:Uri. It is built at a height of 1516 ft. above See also:sea-level, a little above the right See also:bank of the See also:Reuss, not far above the point where this See also:river is joined on the right by the Schachen torrent. In 1900 the See also:population was 3117, all Romanists and See also:German-speaking. Altdorf is 34 M. from See also:Lucerne by the St Gotthard railway and 22 M. from Goeschenen.
