ATHOL , a township of See also:

Worcester See also:county, See also:northern See also:Massachusetts, U.S.A., having an See also:area of 35 sq. m. Pop. (1900) 7061, of whom 986 were See also:foreign-See also:born; "(1910 U.S. See also:census) 8536. Its See also:surface is irregular and hilly. The See also:village of Athol is on See also:Miller's See also:river, and is served by the See also:Boston & See also:Albany and the Boston & See also:Maine See also:railways. The streams of the township furnish See also:good See also:water-See also:power, and manufactures of varied See also:character are its leading interests. Athol was first settled in 1735, and was incorporated as a township in 1762. It was named by its largest landowner See also:Col. See also:James See also:Murray, after the ancestral See also:home of the Murrays, See also:dukes of See also:Atholl. See L. B. Caswell, Athol, See also:Mass., Past and See also:Present (Athol, 1899).
