BAHIA BLANCA , a See also:city and See also:port of See also:Argentina, on the Naposta See also:river, 3 M. from its outlet into a deep, well-sheltered See also:bay of the same name. Pop. (est. 1903) ,1,600. It is situated in the extreme See also:southern See also:part of the See also:province of Buenos Aires and is 447 M. by See also:rail S.W. of the See also:national See also:capital. The opening to See also:settlement of the national territories of La See also:Pampa and See also:Neuquen has contributed largely to the growth and importance of Bahia Blanca. It is the natural See also:shipping-port for these territories and for the southern districts of the province of Buenos Aires, from which See also:great quantities of See also:wheat and See also:wool are exported. The bay has See also:long been recognized as one of the best on the See also:Argentine See also:coast, and when the channel is properly dredged, will admit steamers of 30 ft. See also:draught at See also:low-See also:water. The Argentine See also:government has located its See also:principal See also:naval station here, at the Puerto Militar, between the .city and the entrance to the bay. The port, whose See also:trade is increasing rapidly, is connected with the neighbouring and interior producing districts by five or six lines of railway and their branches. Bahia Blanca See also:dates from 1828, when a fort and trading See also:post were located here, but its development as a commercial centre began only in 1885, when its first railway See also:line was opened. In 1908 See also:direct railway communication was opened with See also:Mendoza and See also:San Juan.

Though situated near the mountainous See also:

section of southern Buenos Aires, the immediate vicinity of the city is low and swampy, its water is brackish, and it has been decidedly unhealthy; but a water See also:supply from the See also:Sauce Grande, 50 M. distant, was projected in 1906, and this, with better drainage and See also:street paving, was expected to improve matters. The mean See also:annual temperature is 6o°, and the See also:average annual rainfall is 19 in. The city has street cars, electric-See also:lights and See also:telephone service, and the port has a shipping See also:pier 1640 ft. long, with spacious warehouses and several See also:miles of railway sidings.
