BARDOWIEK , a See also:

village of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hanover, 3 M. N. of See also:Luneburg on the navigable See also:Ilmenau. Pop. 2000. Its See also:trade consists entirely in agricultural produce. The See also:Gothic See also:parish See also:church (c. 1400) incorporates remains of a See also:cathedral of vast dimensions. Bardowiek was founded in the 8th See also:century by See also:Charlemagne, who established a bishopric in it, and until its destruction by See also:Henry the See also:Lion in 1189, it was the most prosperous commercial See also:city of See also:north Germany. Its name is derived from the Longobardi, the tribe for whom it was the See also:home and centre, and from it the colonization of See also:Lombardy started.
