Entering the See also:Union See also:army in 1861, he took See also:part in the battles of See also:Shiloh, See also:Corinth and See also:Vicksburg, as See also:major of the 15th See also:Iowa See also:volunteers. In the See also:Atlanta See also:campaign under See also:Sherman he gained considerable distinction, rising successively to the See also:rank of brigadier-See also:general in 1864 and major-general in 1865. During the four years that followed he was See also:collector of See also:internal See also:revenue for Iowa, leaving that See also:post in 1869 to become secretary of See also:war. In 1876, in consequence of unproved accusations of corruption, he resigned. He died at See also:Washington, D.C., on the 13th of See also:October 1890.
