After studying at the university of his native See also:town, where he profited by the instruction of G. See also:Hermann, he was appointed in 1835 to the lectureship in Latin at the See also:orphan school at See also:Halle. After holding posts at Neustrelitz, See also:Berlin and See also:Cassel, he succeeded (1842) K. F. Hermann as See also:professor of classical literature at See also:Marburg. In 1852 he went to See also:Freiburg, and in 1857 returned to Halle. In 1868 he resigned his professorship, and settled down to study and See also:literary See also:work in See also:Bonn. He died on the loth of See also:July 1881, at See also:Ragatz in See also:Switzerland, where he had gone for the benefit of his See also:health. Bergk's literary activity was very See also:great, but his reputation mainly rests upon his work in connexion with See also:Greek literature and the Greek lyric poets. His Poetae Lyrici Graeci (1843, 5th ed. 1900, &e.), and Griechische Litteraturgeschichte (1872—1887, completed by G. See also:Hinrichs and R. Peppmuller) are See also:standard See also:works. He also edited See also:Anacreon (1834), the fragments of See also:Aristophanes (184o), Aristophanes (3rd ed., 1872), See also:Sophocles (2nd ed., 1868), a lyric See also:anthology (4th ed., 1890). Among his other works may be mentioned: See also:Augusti Rerum a se geslarum See also:Index (1873); Inschriften romischer Schleudergeschosse (1876); Zur Geschichte and Topographic der Rheinlande in rOmischer Zeil (1882); Beitrage zur romischen Chronologie (1884). His Kleine philologische Schriften have been edited by Peppmuller (1884-1886), and contain, in addition to a See also:complete See also:list of his writings, a See also:sketch of his See also:life.
