CASSEL , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:France in the See also:department of See also:Nord, 34 M. N.W. of See also:Lille by See also:rail. Pop. (1906) 1844. It stands on an isolated See also:hill (515 ft.) from which portions of France, See also:Belgium and See also:England can be seen, with 32 towns and See also:loo villages, including St Omer, See also:Dunkirk, See also:Ypres and See also:Ostend. The former hotel de ville (1634), the hotel de la See also:Noble Cour, once the seat of the See also:jurisdiction of maritime See also:Flanders, now the town-See also:hall, and the hotel See also:des dues d'See also:Halluin are the historic buildings of the town. Cassel has a communal See also:college. Its See also:industrial establishments include tanneries, oil-See also:mills, See also:salt refineries and breweries, and there is See also:trade in See also:cattle and See also:butter. The town, supposed to occupy the site of Castellum Menapiorum, was a See also:Roman station, as numerous remains of the Gallo-Roman See also:period attest, and an important centre of roads. It is frequently mentioned in the See also:wars of the See also:middle ages, and was the See also:scene of important battles in 1071, when See also:Robert, See also:count of Flanders, vanquished his See also:rival See also:Arnulf; 1328, when See also:Philip of See also:Valois defeated the Flemish; and 1677, when See also:William of See also:Orange was defeated by Philip, See also:duke of See also:Orleans, See also:brother of See also:Louis XIV.
