BIELLA , a°;See also:

town and episcopal see of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Novara, 55 M. N.E. of See also:Turin by See also:rail, and 38 m. See also:direct, situated on the S. edge of the See also:lower See also:Alps. Pop. (1901) town, 3454; See also:commune, 19,267. The old town (1558 ft.) lies on a See also:hill above the new town, and is reached from it by a See also:cable See also:tramway. It has See also:fine palaces with decorations in terra-See also:cotta; and a See also:modern See also:bath See also:establishment is situated here. The new town contains the 15th-See also:century See also:cathedral and the fine See also:Renaissance See also:church of S. Sebastiano; near the former is a See also:baptistery of the 9th century. It is a considerable manufacturing centre for woollens, silks and cottons, electric See also:power being furnished by the torrents descending from the mountains at the See also:foot of which it lies. It is frequented as a tourist centre, and several hydropathic establishments and See also:mountain resorts See also:lie in the vicinity.
