He studied first at See also:Bonn and afterwards at Berlin, where his See also:attention was directed towards the philological peculiarities of the See also:South See also:African See also:languages. In his See also:doctor's dissertation (Bonn, 1851), De nominum generibus linguarum Africae Australis, he endeavoured to show that the Hottentot See also:language was of See also:North African descent. In 1854 his See also:health prevented him accompanying Dr W. B. See also:Baikie in the expedition to the See also:Niger; but in the following See also:year he accompanied See also:Bishop See also:Colenso to See also:Natal, and was enabled to prosecute his researches into the language and customs of the See also:Kaffirs. Towards the See also:close of 1856 he settled at Cape See also:Town, and in 1857 was appointed interpreter by See also:Sir See also:George See also:Grey. In 1859 he was compelled by See also:ill-health to visit See also:Europe, and on his return in the following year he was made librarian of the valuable collection of books presented to the See also:colony by Sir George Grey. In 1869 he visited See also:England, where the value of his services was recognized by a See also:pension from the See also:civil See also:list. He died at Cape Town on the 17th of See also:August 1875.
