BOBRUISK , a See also:

town and formerly a first-class fortress of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Minsk, and See also:loo m. by See also:rail S.E. of the town of Minsk, in 530 15' N. See also:lat. and 28° 52' E. See also:long., on the right See also:bank of the See also:Berezina See also:river, and on the railway from See also:Libau and See also:Vilna to Ekaterinoslay. Pop. (186o) 23,761; (1897) 35,177, of whom one-See also:half were See also:Jews. In the reign of See also:Alexander I. there was erected here, at the confluence of the Bobruiska with the Berezina, nearly a mile from the town, a fort, which success-fully withstood a See also:bombardment by See also:Napoleon in 1812, and was made equal to the best in See also:Europe by the See also:emperor See also:Nicholas I. It was demolished in 1897, the defences being antiquated. The town has a military See also:hospital and a departmental See also:college. There are ironworks and See also:flour-See also:mills; and See also:corn and See also:timber are shipped to Libau. The town was half burnt down in 1902.
