His first See also:campaign was under the See also:count of See also:Brissac in the Piedmontese wars. On his return to See also:France in 1554 he joined See also:Admiral See also:Coligny. Charged with the See also:defence of See also:Rouen, in 1562, he resigned in favour of See also:Montgomery, to whom the See also:prince of See also:Conde had entrusted the task, and went over to See also:England, where he concluded the treaty of See also:Hampton See also:Court on the loth of See also:September. He then returned to France, and took See also:Dieppe from the Catholics before the conclusion of See also:peace. If his See also:share in the second religious See also:war was less important, he played a very active See also:part in the third. He fought at See also:Jarnac, See also:Roche-Abeille and Montcontour, assisted in the See also:siege of See also:Poitiers, was nearly captured by the Catholics at Bourg-Dieu, re-victualled See also:Vezelay, and almost surprised See also:Bourges. In 1570, being charged by Coligny to stop the See also:army of the princes in its ascent of the See also:Rhone valley, he crossed See also:Burgundy and effected his junctionwith the admiral at St `See also:Etienne in May. On the 21st of the following See also:June he assisted in achieving the victory of Arnayle-Due, and was then employed to negotiate a See also:marriage between the prince of See also:Navarre and See also:Elizabeth of England. Being in See also:Paris on the See also:night. of St See also:Bartholomew he took See also:refuge in the See also:house of the See also:English See also:ambassador, but was arrested there. With his friend See also:Arnaud de Cavagnes he was delivered over to the See also:parlement, and failed in courage when confronted with his See also:judges, seeking, to See also:escape See also:death by unworthy means.

He was condemned, nevertheless, on the 27th of See also:
