BROWNING, OSCAR (1837- ) , See also:English writer, was '-iorn in See also:London on the 17th of See also:January 1837, the son of a See also:merchant, See also:William See also:Shipton Browning. He was educated at See also:Eton and at See also:King's See also:College, See also:Cambridge, of which he became See also:fellow and See also:tutor, graduating See also:fourth in the classical tripos of 186o. He was for fifteen years a See also:master at Eton College, resuming See also:residence in 1876 at Cambridge, where he became university lecturer in See also:history. He soon became a prominent figure in college and university See also:life, encouraging especially the study of See also:political See also:science and See also:modern political history, the See also:extension of university teaching and the See also:movement for the training of teachers. He is well known to See also:Dante students by his Dante; Life and See also:Works (1891), and to the study of See also:Italian history he has contributed Guelphs and Ghibellines (1903). His works on modern history include See also:England and See also:Napoleon in 1803 (1887), History of England (4 vols. 1890), See also:Wars of the Nineteenth See also:Century (1899), History of See also:Europe 1814-1843 (Igor), Napoleon, the first Phase (1905).
