BUDE , a small seaport and watering-See also:

place in the See also:Launceston See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Cornwall,. See also:England, on the See also:north See also:coast at the mouth of the See also:river Bude. With the See also:market See also:town of Stratton, ri m. inland to the See also:east, it forms the See also:urban See also:district of Stratton and Bude, with a See also:population (19o1) of 2308. Bude is served by a See also:branch of the See also:London & See also:South-Western railway. Its only notable See also:building is the See also:Early See also:English See also:parish See also:church of St See also:Michael and All Angels. The See also:climate is healthy and the coast scenery in the neighbourhood See also:fine, especially towards the south. There the gigantic cliffs, with their banded strata, have been broken into fantastic forms by the waves. Many See also:ships have been wrecked on the jagged reefs which fringe their See also:base. The figure-See also:head of one of these, the " Bencellon," lost in 1862, is preserved in the See also:churchyard. The See also:harbour, sheltered by a See also:breakwater, will admit vessels of 300 tons at high See also:water; and the river has been dammed to See also:form a See also:basin for the See also:canal which runs to Launceston. Some fishing is carried on: but the See also:staple See also:trade is the export of See also:sand, which, being highly charged with carbonate of See also:lime, is much used for manure. There are See also:golf links near the town.
