At the outbreak of the See also:Civil See also:War he entered the See also:United States See also:cavalry as a private, and he See also:rose to commissioned See also:rank in 1863, becoming See also:brevet See also:captain in 1865. He remained in the See also:army after the war and took See also:part with distinction in many See also:Indian See also:campaigns. His promotion was, however, slow, and he was at the See also:age of fifty-six still a See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel of cavalry, But in 1898, at the outbreak of the See also:Spanish-American War, he was made brigadier-general and soon afterwardsmajor-generalofvolunteers. In the Cuban See also:campaign he won particular distinction, and the victory of the Americans in the See also:action of El Caney was in large measure due to his careful See also:personal reconnaissances of the ground to be attacked and to the endurance of his own See also:brigade. Afterreverting for a See also:time to the rank of brigadier-general, he was made a See also:major-general U.S.V. again in 1900 and was appointed to command the United States contingent in See also:China. He took a brilliant and successful part in the advance on See also:Peking and the See also:relief of the Legations. In 1901 he became a major-general in the See also:regular army, and in Ig01-1902 commanded the See also:Division of the Philippines. In 1902-1903 he commanded the See also:Department of the See also:East, and from 1904 to 1906 was See also:chief of the general See also:staff of the army. In 1904 he received the rank of lieutenant-general in the United States army, being the first enlisted See also:man of the regular army to attain this, the highest rank in the service. He was retired at his own See also:request on the 1st of See also:February 1906,. after more than See also:forty years' service.
