COLIMA , a See also:city of See also:Mexico and See also:capital of a See also:state of the same name, 570 M. (See also:direct) W. by S. of Mexico City and about 36 m. inland from the Pacific See also:coast. Pop. (1895) 18,977; (1900) 20,698. Colima is picturesquely situated on the Colima See also:river, in a large fertile valley about 165o ft. above the See also:sea, and lies in the midst of See also:fine See also:mountain-scenery. About 3o m. to the See also:north-See also:east the See also:volcano of Colima, in the state of See also:Jalisco, rises to an See also:elevation of 12,685 ft.; it is the most See also:westerly of the active volcanoes of Mexico. Colima enjoys a moderately cool and healthy See also:climate, especially in the dry See also:season (See also:November to See also:June). The city is regularly laid out and is in See also:great See also:part well built, with See also:good public buildings, several churches, a See also:theatre, two hospitals, and a handsome See also:market completed in 1905. Tramways connect the central plaza with the railway station, See also:cemetery, and the suburb of See also:Villa de See also:Alvarez, 22 M. distant, and an See also:extension of 5 m. was projected in 1906 to Comala. The See also:local See also:industries include two old-fashioned See also:cotton See also:mills, an See also:ice plant, See also:corn-grinding See also: Colima was founded in 1522 by Gonzalo de Sandoval. It has not played a very prominent part in Mexican See also:history because of its inaccessibility, and for the same See also:reason has suffered less from revolutionary violence.
