DALKEY , a small See also:

port and watering-See also:place of Co. See also:Dublin, See also:Ireland, in the See also:south See also:parliamentary See also:division; 9 M. S.E. of Dublin by the Dublin & South-Eastern railway. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (19o1), 3398. It is pleasantly situated on and about See also:Sorrento Point, the See also:southern See also:horn of Dublin See also:Bay. Dalkey See also:Island, lying off the See also:town, has an See also:ancient ruined See also:chapel, of the See also:history of which nothing is certainly known, and a disused See also:battery, which protected the See also:harbour, a landing-place of some former importance. A See also:castle in the town, of the 15th See also:century, is restored to use as offices for the urban district See also:council. There are also ruins of an old See also:church, the See also:dedication of which, like the island chapel, is ascribed to one St Begnet, perhaps a diminutive See also:form of Bega, but the identity is not clear. Until the See also:close of the 18th century Dalkey was notorious for the See also:burlesque See also:election of a " See also:king," a See also:mock ceremony which became invested with a certain See also:political importance.
