DAVID I . (d. 1203), a son of See also:Prince See also:Owen Gwynedd (d. 1169), came into prominence as a See also:leader of the Welsh during the expedition of See also:Henry II. in 1157. In 1170 he became See also:lord of Gwynedd (i.e. the See also:district around See also:Snowdon), but some regarded him as a See also:bastard, and Gwynedd was also claimed by other members of his See also:family. After fighting with varying fortunes he sought an ally in the See also:English See also:king, whom he supported during the baronial rising in 1173; then after this event he married Henry's See also:half-See also:sister Emma. But his enemies increased in See also:power, and about 1194 he was driven from See also:Wales by the partisans of his half-See also:brother See also:Llewelyn ab Iorwerth. The chronicler See also:Benedictus Abbas calls David rex, and Rhuddlan See also:castle was probably the centre of his vague authority.
